Surgical care

Cataract surgery

A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens. Dr. Woods and Dr. Hastings perform modern small-incision cataract surgery at Advanced Eye Surgery Center and Skyway Surgery Center in Chico. The surgery lasts about 10 minutes, is typically suture-less, and you are given IV sedation for comfort. At your consultation, your surgeon walks you through the lens options and the risks.

Vision correction

LASIK

LASIK uses a laser to reshape the cornea so you can rely less on glasses or contacts. Our practice uses the iLASIK system with iDESIGN technology, which maps your eye in fine detail, including astigmatism. A consultation tells you whether LASIK, PRK or another option suits your eyes.

Lens surgery

Refractive Lens Exchange

Also called clear lens extraction, RLE replaces your natural lens with a lens implant chosen for your vision goals, even when no cataract is present. Many patients over 45 consider it instead of LASIK or PRK. It is elective, so costs are out of pocket and not covered by insurance.

EVO ICL

An implantable lens placed inside the eye that corrects nearsightedness, with or without astigmatism, without permanently reshaping the cornea. It can be an option if you want less dependence on glasses or contacts but are not a fit for laser surgery.

Glaucoma care

Glaucoma often has no early symptoms, which is why we check your eye pressure at every comprehensive exam. When treatment is needed, options range from monitoring and drops to microinvasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), including the Hydrus stent and the Xen Gel Stent, designed to help lower eye pressure.

Eye exams & contact lenses

A comprehensive exam goes far beyond a vision screening: we check the outside and inside of your eye, test eye pressure for glaucoma, and update your prescription. We also fit contact lenses, including daily disposables, toric, multifocal and rigid gas permeable lenses, and offer diabetic and pediatric exams.

Surgical care

Eyelid surgery

Blepharoplasty removes excess skin from the upper eyelids, and ptosis surgery lifts a drooping eyelid so it sits higher above the pupil. Both are done as medically necessary procedures, often together, when significant symptoms are present.

Frequently asked questions

Don't see your question? Call (530) 899-2244 and our team will help.

What is the difference between an ophthalmologist and an optometrist?

An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor (MD) who diagnoses and treats eye disease and performs eye surgery. An optometrist (OD) provides primary eye care, such as comprehensive exams, glasses and contact lens prescriptions, and management of many eye conditions. Here, Dr. Woods and Dr. Hastings are ophthalmologist surgeons and Dr. Levine is our optometrist, so you can go from an exam to surgery without changing practices.

How long does cataract surgery take?

The surgery itself lasts approximately 10 minutes. It uses small incisions that are typically suture-less, and you are given intravenous sedation for comfort. Plan for extra time at the surgery center for check-in and recovery, and talk through the risks with your surgeon at your consultation.

Is refractive lens exchange covered by insurance?

No. Refractive lens exchange is an elective procedure, so the costs are out of pocket and not covered by insurance. Call us and we can walk you through payment options.

What is the Light Adjustable Lens?

The RxSight Light Adjustable Lens is a lens implant placed during cataract surgery that can be fine-tuned after your eye heals. In-office UV light sessions, each about 90 seconds, adjust the prescription, and a final lock-in treatment sets it permanently. You wear UV-protective glasses in between, so it does involve extra visits.

How often should I get an eye exam?

The American Optometric Association recommends an eye exam every two years if you are 18 to 60 and not having any problems. From age 61 on, schedule a comprehensive exam every year, or as often as your eye doctor recommends.

Do you take my insurance?

We work with many vision and medical plans, including Medicare, EyeMed, Spectera, Davis Vision and several Blue Cross Blue Shield plans. Plans change, so call (530) 899-2244 and we will run an authorization to check your eligibility before your exam.

What counts as an eye emergency?

Trauma, cuts, scratches, something stuck in the eye, burns, chemical exposure, damage from intense light, and blunt injuries to the eye or eyelid all need prompt care, as do sudden vision loss, double vision or a painful red eye. Do not rub the eye or try to remove an object stuck in it. For a severe injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. For a chemical splash, flush the eye with large amounts of clean water right away.

Can my optometrist co-manage my surgery?

Yes. Your optometrist can refer you for an evaluation and, if surgery is recommended and the surgeon feels it is medically appropriate, can choose to co-manage your post-op care. Either way, you go back to your referring provider for your general eye care.

Do you have an optical shop?

Yes. Our optical team helps you choose frames and lenses, including single vision, progressive, computer and high-index lenses, plus coatings like anti-reflective and scratch-resistant. Fittings and adjustments are included in our service.
